GEO vs. SEO: what changes and what stays

Generative Engine Optimization does not replace SEO — it grades the same homework against a new examiner.

SEO optimizes for a results page: rank high, win the click. GEO — Generative Engine Optimization — optimizes for an answer: when an assistant composes three sentences about your market, be one of the names in them. The destination changed; the discipline did not disappear. GEO complements SEO. It does not replace it — and anyone selling it as a replacement is selling the fear, not the work.

What GEO actually is

Generative Engine Optimization is the practice of making a website easy for AI systems to find, understand, verify and cite. Where classic SEO negotiates with a ranking algorithm, GEO negotiates with a language model that reads a handful of sources and writes a synthesis. The output is not a list you can appear tenth on — it is prose with room for two or three names. Being one of them is the entire game, in ChatGPT as much as in Google's AI Mode and the growing share of AI search everywhere else.

What stays the same

The fundamentals that earned rankings are the same ones that earn citations. Clean structure a machine can parse without guessing. Pages that actually answer the question, in plain language, near the top. Structured data that states unambiguously what a page is — an article, a product, a local business. Honest expertise, stated plainly, on a fast, crawlable site.

If you have done serious SEO for years, none of that work is wasted. Assistants are built on top of search indexes, not beside them: a page that classic search cannot find rarely makes it into an AI answer either. Your existing WordPress SEO plugin work — titles, schema, sitemaps — is the foundation GEO stands on.

What changes

The metrics, first of all. A ranking is a position on a list of ten; AI visibility is binary and brutal — you are named or you are not. Click-through rate gives way to citation rate, and "page two" no longer exists as a consolation prize. Then the units of work change: GEO rewards the page that answers one question completely over the page that mentions twenty keywords; it rewards a published llms.txt over a hundred tweaked title tags; it rewards being verifiable — consistent facts, real structured data — over being merely popular.

And the tempo changes. Rankings move on a crawl-and-recalculate rhythm; assistant answers move whenever retrieval finds a better source. That cuts both ways — a fixed gap can pay off within weeks, and a competitor's new comparison page can displace you just as quickly.

New instruments

New measures need new instruments. You cannot check your "AI ranking" in a position tracker, because there is no position. What you can check: ask the assistants your customers' questions and record who comes back — which is precisely what an AI visibility check automates: 25 questions, who was named, which pages the answers leaned on.

Why every page needs two scores

A page can rank well and still be useless to an assistant — long, unstructured, the answer buried in paragraph twelve. And a page can be perfectly citable while classic SEO basics are missing. One number would hide that tension. This is why AI Rank Suite gives every page a pair: a GEO score for AI readiness and an SEO score for the classic factors, both 0–100, side by side. The pair tells you which examiner is failing you — and the fix is different in each case.

Where to start

Publish an llms.txt — the highest-leverage single change, one click, no key. Then measure your AI visibility once, before optimizing anything, so you know your real gaps instead of your assumed ones. Then work the gaps in order. GEO rewards the same virtue SEO always did: doing the boring, structural work before the clever work.

FAQ

Is GEO just a new name for SEO?

No. The overlap is large — same fundamentals, same honesty requirement — but the target is different: a synthesized answer instead of a ranked list, a citation instead of a click. New target, new metrics, and some new artifacts — llms.txt above all.

Should I stop investing in classic SEO?

No. Classic search still carries most traffic, and assistants retrieve from search indexes. GEO is an additional layer on the same foundation — which is why it is cheap to add if your SEO is in order, and impossible to fake if it is not.

Can I do GEO without new tools?

Partly. You can write answer-shaped pages and maintain an llms.txt by hand. What you cannot do by hand is measure — asking assistants 25 questions every month and tracking who gets named is exactly the tedious, repeatable job software should do.

How fast does GEO show results?

Structural fixes — llms.txt, schema, a real pricing page — can change assistant answers within weeks, because retrieval is fresh. Reputation-shaped gaps take longer. Either way, re-measure after every change; that loop is the method.
